Most people who indulge in alcohol will, at one point or another, experience a hangover. And I’m not talking about waking up buzzed, I’m talking about a The Hangover kind of awakening. If you haven’t experienced one yet, consider yourself very lucky. Nothing makes one regret a fun night out like waking up the next day with a pounding headache, dizziness, fatigue and an overall feeling of being hit by a bus.

Hangovers are the result of a combination of factors, including alcohol-induced dehydration and chemicals produced during the fermentation process, called congeners. Pacing yourself is a good way to avoid hangovers, but sometimes no matter how careful you try to be, you end up a hangover victim anyway. Instead of curling up in the fetal position and pledging your allegiance to Satan to make the hangover go away, try some hangovers cures that actually work.

Coconut Water

One of my favorite hangover fighters is coconut water. But, I’m not talking about that processed stuff you find at a grocer that is little more than sugar water. No, you may need to hit up a bona fide health food store to find natural, organic, coconut water with no added sugar. Mother Nature knows best when it comes to hangover cures. Coconut water is excellent at replenishing crucial electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magnesium, to help cure your hangover and ease symptoms brought on by alcohol-induced dehydration. Skip the concentrated crap and look for fresh coconut water made from young coconuts and free of natural ‘flavors’.

Red Ginseng

If you’re having one of those “kill me now” hangovers, you likely feel more ghoulish than human. Don’t worry, you can bring yourself back to life by keeping some red ginseng in your cabinet. This Korean herb is known for its erectile dysfunction benefits, but, researchers found that it’s also useful for rebounding from hangovers. After heavily indulging in alcohol, study volunteers took red ginseng. According to the researchers, the red ginseng helped the body detox from alcohol faster and eased common hangover symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.

Prickly Pear

A little known hangover ‘preventer’ is prickly pear. But before you run out to purchase any old cactus and dive into eating its fruit, know that you’ll need the dried extract. It’s usually available in pill form at most health food stores. Taking a prickly pear supplement before indulging in alcohol prevents hangover symptoms and helps the body metabolize alcohol better, according to a Tulane University study. That doesn’t mean that you should go out and drink with reckless abandon. It’s still a good idea to eat a nutritious, fiber-rich meal prior to consuming alcohol. Of course, don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated – and above all else, drink in moderation.
