Can Porn Stars Have Boring Sex?

The difference between on-screen performance and at-home intimacy.

As anyone who watches porn knows, the sex you see on film rarely looks like the kind of sex you’re having at home. For many of us, sex at home may be pretty vanilla (or as you might call it ‘boring’, for lack of a better term). After all, porn is a fantasy, and the sex you have at home, in your bedroom, is real life. But what you may not realize is that the sex porn stars have on camera is a fantasy for us too! And what we do in our films doesn’t necessarily look like what we do at home, in our bedrooms, when we’re off the clock.

Think about what makes a good porn scene. You want sex that’s exciting and explosive, and you want sex that looks good. Having sex on camera is all about making sure that the audience gets what they want. So while I may be enjoying myself in my scenes, I’m also constantly thinking about whether you’ll enjoy it later.

Sure, chemistry is important in porn, and when I’ve been paired up with actors or actresses with whom I had zero chemistry, my scenes weren’t as fun — for me or the audience — but there are other things that go into making a good scene.

First, there’s me. I have to look like Nikki Benz on camera. That could mean anywhere from one to three hours getting ready, making sure I have my hair and makeup done, that my nails are done, that any bruises I may have from feature dancing are covered. I have to make sure I don’t look tired, even if I just flew on a red-eye across the country and haven’t slept yet.

Then there are the non-sex parts of filming a porn scene to think about. We have to take stills for the DVD cover and promotional materials, and we have to film the parts of the scene that are all plot and dialogue. We may have to shoot and re-shoot a scene until the lighting is right and the angles are perfect, and that’s all before we even get our clothes off.

Once we’re into the scene and getting down to business, it’s still not all fun and games. In addition to all the regular photos we take, we have to pose for sex stills to promote the scene, which means having sex without really having sex. It’s bad enough for the guys, but for the women in porn, we have to make sure our hair and makeup look perfect for those shots, and that our bodies are posed just right so you don’t see any slight flaws or imperfections. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a partner who knows where to place his hands and how to pose himself to help you look good. And then you’ve got the director calling out instructions to you, and a room full of film crew watching you. And you have to look like you’re having the best sex ever with all of that going on.

Filming a porn scene is about putting on a show. And we have to constantly be mindful of timing and schedules. Sometimes that means we need to finish on a deadline, and other times it means we have to keep things going for longer than we might otherwise.

At home, I don’t have to worry about those things. I can fuck however I want because I don’t have to be aware of a camera or director, and my partner and I can be ourselves. Sex at home is about romance and passion, and it can be spontaneous. I don’t have to think about scripts or angles, or worry about how I look. And there’s more of a connection with my off-screen sex partners. Feelings are involved, whether we’re in love or just lust, and that makes the sex more real, more raw, and oftentimes, more enjoyable.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I connect with my on-screen partners, too. Take Johnny Sins, for example, with whom I have amazing chemistry. My scenes with him are definitely passionate and fun. And then there’s Keiran Lee, who happens to be one of my best friends. We have amazing on-screen sex together, and we have so much fun, but at the end of the scene, we’re done. He goes home to his wife, another good friend of mine, and that’s that.

Porn is entertainment for everyone, especially the performers. Chances are, your favorite porn star has a headache sometimes, or isn’t in the mood, or just wants to do it missionary-style and not get too crazy. And I’m willing to bet you and your partners feel that way too. It’s okay. So the next time you worry that your sex life doesn’t match the scenes you see in porn, remember that neither does mine. Sometimes it’s okay to be ‘boring’.
